Abstract The apparent brightness of satellites is calculated as a function satellite position seen by ground-based observer in darkness. Both direct illumination the Sun well indirect due to reflection from Earth are included. reflecting properties components and must first be estimated (the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function, or BRDF). can found directly using lab measurements accurately inferred multiple observations at various solar angles. Improved Satellite Brightness Estimation Techniques
The Visual Magnitude Satellite Catalogue effort [1] presently employs a simple straight-line model for solar phaseand declination-angle dependencies, an approach that, at least for declination angle, lacked any real pedigree. The present attempt to improve the modeling began by investigating several competing gridding techniques that would allow two-parameter brightness dependencies to be displ...
متن کاملRobust Brightness Description for Computing Optical Flow
Most optical flow algorithms are based on the assumption of brightness constancy of individual pixels while moving on the image plane. Although being attractive analytically, this assumption is often violated under non-ideal visual conditions resulting in poor flow estimates. This paper presents an approach to support the validity of the assumption under such conditions. The method describes th...
متن کاملNight sky brightness at sites from DMSP-OLS satellite measurements
We apply the sky brightness modelling technique introduced and developed by Roy Garstang to high-resolution DMSP-OLS satellite measurements of upward artificial light flux and to GTOPO30 digital elevation data in order to predict the brightness distribution of the night sky at a given site in the primary astronomical photometric bands for a range of atmospheric aerosol contents. This method, ba...
متن کاملCalibration of Optical Satellite Sensors
Satellite cameras are calibrated before launch in detail and in general, but it cannot be guaranteed that the geometry is not changing during launch and caused by thermal influences and drying out effects in the orbit. Modern satellite imaging systems are based on CCD-line sensors. Because of the required high sampling rate, the length of used CCD-lines is limited. For reaching a sufficient swa...
متن کاملBeyond Brightness Constancy: Learning Noise Models for Optical Flow
Optical flow is typically estimated by minimizing a “data cost” and an optional regularizer. While there has been much work on different regularizers many modern algorithms still use a data cost that is not very different from the ones used over 30 years ago: a robust version of brightness constancy or gradient constancy. In this paper we leverage the recent availability of ground-truth optical...
